Almost two months ahead of its official release at the Tokyo Motor Show in December, Toyota has leaked documents showing specifications for the upcoming 2012 FT-86 (or Scion FR-S for the U.S. market).

The new FT-86/FR-S will be powered by a 2.0L four-cylinder engine making 197 hp at 7,000 rpm and 150 lb-ft of torque at 6,600 rpm. This will allow the FT-86/FR-S to achieve a claimed fuel efficiency of 31.52 mpg. While these numbers are somewhat unimpressive, what it impressive is that the weight is said to be only 2,662lbs.

To put this into perspective, the FT-86/FR-S is intended to compete most closely with the Hyundai Genesis Coupe which with its 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder makes 210hp and 223 lb-ft of torque. This power, however, is pushing the Genesis Coupes’ weight of roughly 3,300 lbs. That looks like this;

FT-86/FR-S – 197 hp and 2,662 lbs = 13.51 lbs/hp
Genesis Coupe 2.0T – 210 hp and 3,294 lbs = 15.68 lbs/hp

Sound a bit better now? I think so. And also Genesis Coupe returns 30 mpg fuel economy as well. This equates to a very nice start for the Toyota/Subaru collaboration.

The FT-86/FR-S will come in two versions, ‘High Spec’ and ‘Low Spec’. The ‘High Spec’ has front LED lighting, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 6-speaker audio system, a white rev counter with shift light and sport pedals. Also, it will include a keyless-access & push/-start ignition and 17” alloy wheels. The ‘Low-Spec’ will make do with 2 speakers and 16” wheels.

As Tokyo gets closer I am sure that more information will arise. One in particular that many will be waiting for is price. Stay tuned.
